Notifiable Conditions

There are over 100 notifiable conditions in Washington State that physicians are required to report to local and state public health officials. More than 95% of these conditions are communicable diseases and are reported to the health department for further surveillance. When a laboratory or doctor’s office reports a condition, we gather information on the patient, conduct an investigation, and provide recommendations to the patient and doctor on treatment options.

We encourage not only medical providers but also members of the community to reach out to us. If you believe there is an unexpected clustering of an unusual disease in your community, you can contact our Communicable Disease staff at 509-249-6541 or email YHD.CD@co.yakima.wa.us. We are also happy to answer illness-related questions, although we are unable to diagnose patients.

If you are interested in learning more about notifiable conditions, please visit the Washington State Department of Health Notifiable Conditions page to download a poster and view information about each condition on the list.
