What is a Food Permit?

A food permit helps ensure that food sold to the public is prepared safely and meets Washington's food safety rules.

When Do I Need a Permit?

Foods that are prepared, cooked, or handled before serving generally require a food permit to be sold to the public.

Examples include:

  • Cut fruits or vegetables
  • Meat, eggs, fish, or dairy
  • Jellies, jams, and dry spice blends
  • Baked goods

When Is a Food Permit Not Required?

Some pre-packaged or minimally handled foods can be sold without a food permit. Depending on the food, approval from the Yakima Health District may still be required.

See the full list of foods that do not require a food permit. If your food requires approval, complete a Food Permit Exemption Application.

What If I’m Selling Home-Based Goods or Wholesale Foods?

Some home-based and wholesale food products are regulated by state or federal agencies, rather than the Yakima Health District. Contact the appropriate agency below to learn more.
