Maintaining Your Well

En Español

Taking care of your well can help protect your drinking water and reduce the risk of contamination. Learn how you can keep your well safe and working properly.

Know Your Well

Knowing where your well is located and how it was built can make inspections, maintenance, and repairs easier. Make sure to keep a copy of your well log, which includes details such as well depth, construction materials, and location. You can search for available well logs using the Washington State Department of Ecology Well Report Viewer

Some wells constructed before 1973 may not have records available. If you are unable to find a well record, we may be able to help locate your well by reviewing septic system records for your property.

Protect the Area Around Your Well

Keeping the area around your well clean, clear, and well-drained can help reduce the risk of contaminants entering your drinking water.

To protect your well:

  • Keep chemicals, motor oil, animal pens, and other potential contaminants at least 100 feet away from your well
  • Avoid enclosing the well with walls, planters, or containers that can trap water or prevent proper drainage

Inspect Your Well

Make sure to inspect your well regularly for signs of damage or wear. Even small issues can allow contaminants to enter your water, so finding and fixing problems early is important.

Note: If your well pump is located inside a well house or other enclosed structure, use caution. These spaces may have poor ventilation, low oxygen levels, or hazardous gases. Contact a licensed professional with the proper equipment to safely inspect the well.
