A two-party or shared well provides drinking water to two homes. Homeowners share responsibility for keeping the well safe, including maintenance, repairs, and water testing. In some cases, in-home businesses with no on-site employees may also qualify as a Group C Public Water System (shared well). For more information, please contact our Environmental Health Help Desk.
Converting to a Two-Party Well
If your home is on an individual well and you want to share it with another residential property, it must meet connection requirements and be approved as a two-party (shared) well system.
Water Rights Requirements
Sharing a well with a with new structure, such as a residence or an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), requires proof of a valid water right as part of the building permit process. We strongly recommend verifying your water rights early, before starting your project.
