Food Inspections

Overview

Our team conducts regular inspections of food businesses across Yakima County to prevent foodborne illness and protect public health. During inspections, Environmental Health Specialists review food handling, hygiene, and cleaning practices, and work with operators to ensure safe operations.

Types of Inspections

Each type of inspection has a different purpose to help ensure safe food handling and compliance with state safety rules.

Types of Violations

There are two types of food safety violations. Red violations are Critical Risk Factors that are more likely to cause food borne illness. Blue violations are low risk factors defined as Good Retail Practices that are less likely to cause illness.

Inspection Results

Environmental Health Specialists work with operators to address violations whenever possible during the inspection. Critical risk factors must be corrected immediately to protect public health.

Additional Outcomes

Some businesses may need additional follow-up if critical or ongoing risk factors are still present.

  • Re-inspection Required: A follow-up inspection will be scheduled to verify that repeated or ongoing critical risk factors have been corrected, even if the business passed the initial inspection.
  • Compliance Required: Critical risk factors remain and more follow-up is needed, such as another inspection or an office conference.
  • Office Conference: The business must meet with YHD to address critical risk factors and create a correction plan.
